I never even stepped foot outside the country until I met my husband. After landing a job with a major airline, everything changed. Suddenly, we were jetting off to wherever we could find open seats to fly standby!
When we started having kids, I chose to stay home with them, which meant giving up those precious flight benefits. But once our kids got older, we began traveling again — and when you’re a family of seven, every family vacation is a group trip!
Being a stay-at-home mom has been the most challenging and rewarding thing I’ve ever done. As my kids have grown and my youngest prepares to head off to college, I’ve had the chance to ask myself how I really want to spend this next chapter.
I thought about what matters most to me, what I’m good at, and what brings me joy: bringing people together, planning memorable experiences, and, of course, traveling.
So, I decided to host my first group trip — as a proof of concept to see if others would be interested. I spread the word, and before I knew it, twenty amazing women signed up to explore the European Christmas Markets with me as their Group Travel Host!
My First Group Travel Host Trip: A Whirlwind Adventure
That first trip was unforgettable. We visited eight cities, five countries, and at least twenty-five Christmas markets in ten days. We dashed through train stations with luggage and shopping bags in tow, fueled by Coke Zero and Kinderpunsch, soaking in every twinkling light and festive song.
We moved fast — maybe too fast — hopping trains every other day to make the most of our time. But I learned something important: it’s okay to slow down. There will always be more to see next time.
One moment I’ll never forget was on a train between cities when I overheard one of the ladies say, “I would’ve never attempted this kind of trip on my own, but I’m so glad I came.” That was the turning point. I realized I could help women feel confident traveling, give them opportunities to see the world, and create friendships that last long after the trip ends.
Lessons Learned from Leading Women’s Group Travel
Here are a few things I discovered on that first adventure:
- Four ladies in a room feels like a slumber party and works great… until it’s time to get ready and there’s only one bathroom.
- Scheduling meal breaks is essential (and no, a croissant doesn’t count!)
- Coordinating twenty women and fifty pieces of luggage across train platforms and up and down stairs is an adventure all its own. (That’s why I prefer private chartered buses!)
- Everyone has their fuel; some thrive on Diet Coke, others on the thrill of Christmas shopping, and most need more bathroom stops than expected!
- Train time means connection time: chatting, laughing, reading, or napping. Snacks are a must!
- There’s always a way to fit just one more souvenir in your bag!
- Seeing familiar sights through someone else’s fresh eyes never gets old.
